Classes & Workshops
In 2008, Elba Hevia y Vaca launched the PyA Conservatory in order to provide a disciplined environment for preserving and reaching the formal structures of Flamenco in an emotionally supportive environment.
-
The Flamenco Posture: body work, placement and understanding center, arm and hand exercises.
-
Exercises and drills in relation to the compas (rhythm) and palos (rhythm family).
-
The compas, or rhythm, of Flamenco is the key musical element that unites the three fundamental forms of expression that make up Flamenco: toque (guitar), cante, and baile. It is essential in learning and creating the art form. Flamenco consists of various palos, and the difference between them lies predominantly in the rhythm structure and melody. We will study the structure through phrase work and rhythm training with palmas.

Residencies
A PyA residency is a six week long program, four-hour sessions twice-a-week. These intensive studio sessions will allow PyA Artistic Director Elba Hevia y Vaca and an apprentice to develop a technique practice that builds on the artist’s dance history.
Hevia y Vaca and apprentice will explore and study many ‘palos’ (rhythm families) and their history, as well compas and verse. There will be a concentration on two of the palos that speak most to the artist, and they will investigate these through movement, palmas (rhythmic hand clapping), singing, and the relationship of these complex structures and how they relate to the verse. The hope is that the artist will find freedom as they grow their Flamenco body. These new skills will afford the artist the confidence in the compas (rhythm) so as to allow their body to fully interpret that moment so that ‘duende’ can occur. Duende is those rare moments of inspired improvisation that are an essential component of Flamenco that can take a lifetime to learn and develop.
Hevia y Vaca sees her journey as a Flamenco artist through an immigrant’s lens, and is also deeply invested in the healing component of Flamenco. These topics and trajectories are also true in many artists’ work and life, and this residency provides the opportunity to investigate these connecting paths.
PyA is currently accepting applications for our next residency starting October 1, 2022.
